Nuclear energy is the energy released from the nucleus of atoms, either through fission (splitting of heavy atomic nuclei) or fusion (combining light atomic nuclei). This energy can be harnessed for various uses, including electricity generation, propulsion (in nuclear submarines or spacecraft), and medical applications.
1. Nuclear Fission:
o In fission, a heavy nucleus, such as uranium-235 or plutonium-239, is split into two lighter nuclei, releasing a large amount of energy in the form of heat.
o The heat produced is used to generate steam, which drives turbines connected to generators, thus producing electricity.
o Fission reactions are controlled in nuclear power plants using moderators and control rods to prevent a runaway chain reaction.
2. Nuclear Fusion:
o Fusion occurs when two light atomic nuclei, such as hydrogen isotopes (deuterium and tritium), combine to form a heavier nucleus, releasing vast amounts of energy.
o Fusion is the process that powers the sun, but it has not yet been fully harnessed on Earth due to the extreme temperatures and pressures required to initiate the reaction.
3. Advantages of Nuclear Energy:
