Geometrical optics is applicable when the size of objects or apertures is much larger than the wavelength of light, and light rays can be approximated as straight lines.

Light Propagation: In physical optics, light waves can spread and bend around obstacles, undergo interference, and exhibit diffraction patterns. Geometrical optics assumes light rays travel in straight lines and do not spread or bend.

Image Formation: Physical optics explains the formation of images by considering the wave nature of light, taking into account effects such as aberrations and diffraction. Geometrical optics simplifies the image formation process by assuming that light rays propagate in straight lines, and focuses on concepts like reflection, refraction, and image formation by lenses and mirrors.

Mathematical Formalism: Physical optics often requires the use of mathematical tools such as wave equations, Fourier analysis, and complex numbers. Geometrical optics relies on simpler mathematical formulations using principles like Snell's law and ray tracing.

Overall, physical optics provides a more comprehensive and accurate description of light behavior, especially when dealing with small-scale phenomena. However, geometrical optics is a simpler and more practical approach for many everyday optical applications, such as designing lenses, mirrors, and optical systems.
