Commutator: A commutator consists of multiple copper segments or bars mounted on the rotor shaft of a DC machine. Each segment is insulated from adjacent segments and connected to individual armature coils. The brushes, typically made of carbon or graphite, make contact with the commutator segments to transfer current.
Slip Ring: Slip rings are circular metal rings mounted on the rotor shaft of an AC machine. They are typically made of brass or copper alloys. The slip rings are smooth and continuous, without segmented bars like a commutator. Brush assemblies or sliding contacts are used to establish electrical contact with the slip rings.
Current Reversal:
Commutator: In a DC machine, the commutator segments and brushes facilitate the reversal of current flow in the armature coils as the rotor rotates. This reversal of current enables the continuous generation of torque in the motor or the maintenance of a constant polarity in the generator.
Slip Ring: In an AC machine, slip rings do not involve current reversal. They transmit alternating current from the stator to the rotor or from the rotor to the stator without changing the direction of the current.
Applications:
Commutator: Commutators are commonly found in DC motors used in various applications, such as electric vehicles, appliances, industrial machinery, and power tools. They are also present in DC generators used for specialized purposes.
Slip Ring: Slip rings are frequently used in wound rotor induction motors, which find application in heavy machinery, wind turbines, cranes, and some traction systems. They are also utilized in AC generators and certain rotating sensors or instruments.
