Diffraction of light refers to the bending or spreading out of light waves as they encounter an obstacle or pass through an aperture. It occurs due to the wave nature of light, where the waves interact with the edges of an object or an opening, leading to interference and diffraction patterns.

There are two main types of diffraction: Fresnel diffraction and Fraunhofer diffraction.

Fresnel Diffraction: This type of diffraction occurs when the light waves pass through an aperture or encounter an obstacle and the diffracted waves are observed in the near-field region, close to the diffracting object. Fresnel diffraction is characterized by curved wavefronts and can produce complex interference patterns. The size and shape of the diffracting aperture or obstacle and the distance between the object and the screen where the diffraction pattern is observed play a significant role in the pattern formation.

Fraunhofer Diffraction: Fraunhofer diffraction, also known as far-field diffraction, occurs when the light waves pass through a small aperture or diffract around a small obstacle, and the diffracted waves are observed in the far-field region, far away from the diffracting object. In this case, the diffracted waves appear as nearly parallel rays. Fraunhofer diffraction patterns are simpler compared to Fresnel diffraction patterns, as they are formed under the assumption of a parallel beam of light and a far-field observation point. The pattern is characterized by a central bright spot called the central maximum, surrounded by a series of dark and bright fringes known as interference fringes or diffraction orders.

Both types of diffraction are important in various scientific and technological applications. Diffraction phenomena are observed in optics, such as in the formation of interference patterns in Young's double-slit experiment or diffraction gratings. They are also relevant in other fields like acoustics, electron microscopy, and X-ray crystallography, where the diffraction of waves provides valuable information about the structure and properties of materials.
