An aldehyde is a type of organic compound characterized by a carbonyl functional group (C=O) bonded to a hydrogen atom and connected to a carbon atom of a hydrocarbon chain. The general structure of an aldehyde is RCHO, where R represents an alkyl or aryl group.

The IUPAC name of aldehydes follows the format of substituting the "-e" ending of the corresponding alkane with "-al". The position of the carbonyl group is indicated by the lowest possible number in the carbon chain.

The first three members of the aldehyde series and their IUPAC names and formulas are:

Formaldehyde

IUPAC name: Methanal
Chemical formula: CH2O
Acetaldehyde

IUPAC name: Ethanal
Chemical formula: C2H4O
Propionaldehyde

IUPAC name: Propanal
Chemical formula: C3H6O
