A cationic surfactant is a type of surfactant characterized by having a positively charged ion (cation) in its molecular structure. Surfactants, or surface-active agents, are compounds that lower the surface tension between two substances, such as a liquid and a solid or between two liquids. They are widely used in various industrial, household, and personal care products.

Cationic surfactants are particularly useful in formulations where their positive charge enables them to interact with negatively charged surfaces or substrates. They are often found in products such as hair conditioners, fabric softeners, skin care products, and certain types of disinfectants and sanitizers.

One common example of a cationic surfactant is cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). These surfactants have specific properties and applications based on their chemical structure and charge, making them valuable ingredients in various formulations.
