Thrust is a physics concept that refers to the force exerted by a propulsion system to propel an object in a particular direction. It is most commonly associated with rocket engines, jet engines, and other types of propulsion systems.
When a propulsion system operates, it expels mass at a high velocity in one direction. According to Newton's third law of motion, every action has an equal and opposite reaction. In the case of thrust, as the expelled mass goes in one direction, the object or vehicle experiences an equal and opposite force in the opposite direction. This force is known as thrust.
In simpler terms, thrust is the force that pushes a rocket, airplane, or any other propelled object forward. It is the driving force that enables vehicles to overcome drag, air resistance, or any other resistance, allowing them to move in the intended direction.
For example, in a rocket engine, thrust is generated by the combustion of propellant, creating a high-velocity exhaust that propels the rocket upward. In a jet engine, thrust is produced by expelling air at high speeds from the rear of the engine, pushing the aircraft forward. The greater the amount of thrust generated, the faster the vehicle can accelerate and reach its desired speed.
