According to Newton's first law of motion, also known as the law of inertia, an object at rest tends to stay at rest, and an object in motion tends to stay in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an external force.

In other words, inertia is the tendency of an object to resist any changes in its velocity. If an object is stationary, it requires a force to set it in motion. Similarly, if an object is already in motion, it will continue moving in a straight line at a constant speed unless acted upon by an external force.

The property of inertia is directly related to an object's mass. Objects with greater mass have greater inertia, meaning they require more force to accelerate or decelerate compared to objects with lesser mass. This principle has practical applications in various fields, such as engineering, mechanics, and transportation, where the understanding of inertia is crucial for designing and predicting the behavior of objects in motion.
