Lateral stress refers to the stress that occurs perpendicular to the axis of a material or structure. When an object is subjected to a force, it experiences stress, and if this force is applied laterally (from the sides), it causes lateral stress. This stress is responsible for deformation in the perpendicular direction, often resulting in a change in the object's width or thickness.

For example, when a cylindrical rod is stretched by pulling it along its length (tensile stress), it tends to get thinner in the lateral direction due to lateral stress. Similarly, if the rod is compressed along its length (compressive stress), it tends to bulge out laterally.
