What is a second’s pendulum?

A second's pendulum is a specific type of pendulum that has a period of exactly one second. The period of a pendulum refers to the time it takes for the pendulum to complete one full swing back and forth. In the case of a second's pendulum, it swings from one side to the other and back in exactly one second.

The time period of a pendulum is affected by its length. The length of a second's pendulum is determined in such a way that the force of gravity provides the necessary acceleration to complete one swing in one second. It turns out that a pendulum with a length of approximately 0.994 meters (or about 39.1 inches) at sea level and at a latitude of around 45 degrees will have a period very close to one second.
