In a solid, heat is primarily transferred through the process of conduction. Conduction is a mode of heat transfer that occurs due to the vibration and collision of atoms and molecules within a material. When one part of a solid is heated, the kinetic energy of the particles in that region increases, causing them to vibrate more rapidly. These rapidly vibrating particles then transfer their kinetic energy to neighboring particles through collisions, and this process continues throughout the material. As a result, heat is conducted from the hotter region to the colder region within the solid.

Conduction is most effective in solids because the particles in solids are closely packed, and they have strong intermolecular forces that facilitate the transfer of thermal energy. In contrast, heat transfer in fluids (liquids and gases) primarily occurs through convection and radiation, as the particles in fluids are more mobile and less densely packed than those in solids.
