In a geometric progression (GP), the common ratio is the constant factor between consecutive terms. If we have a geometric sequence of terms, for example, a, ar, ar², ar³, ..., the common ratio (r) is the factor by which each term is multiplied to get the next term.

To find the common ratio, divide any term by the previous term. That is:

r = (second term) / (first term)

or

r = (third term) / (second term)

This ratio remains constant throughout the entire sequence.

For example, if the terms of a GP are 3, 6, 12, 24, ..., you can calculate the common ratio as:

r = 6 / 3 = 2

Thus, the common ratio in this GP is 2.
