For example, when an atom loses one or more electrons, it becomes a positive ion (cation), whereas if it gains one or more electrons, it becomes a negative ion (anion).

Dissociation, on the other hand, involves the separation of a compound into its constituent ions or atoms. This process typically occurs in substances that are composed of charged species or have ionic bonds. When a compound dissociates, the chemical bonds within the compound are broken, resulting in the formation of ions. Dissociation can occur in various ways, such as by dissolving a solid in a solvent (e.g., dissolving table salt in water) or by subjecting a compound to high temperatures or electrical current. An example of dissociation is the breakdown of water molecules (H2O) into hydrogen ions (H+) and hydroxide ions (OH-) in an aqueous solution.
