Sigma Bonds

A sigma bond is the strongest type of covalent bond formed when two atomic orbitals overlap directly. This overlap can occur between:

  • Two s orbitals
  • One s and one p orbital
  • Two p orbitals

In a sigma bond, the electron density is concentrated along the axis connecting the two nuclei, which allows for free rotation around the bond. This bond is essential in single bonds and the first bond in double and triple bonds.

Pi Bonds
