A graduated cylinder is a common laboratory glassware used for measuring the volume of liquids with relatively high precision. It has a cylindrical shape with a flat base and a narrow vertical tube. The tube is marked with calibrated volume measurements, typically in milliliters (mL) or liters (L), which allows for accurate readings of the liquid's volume.

The markings on the graduated cylinder can vary in size, and the volume scale can start from the base and extend up towards the top or vice versa. To obtain a precise measurement, you read the level of the liquid at the meniscus, which is the curved surface of the liquid caused by capillary action. For most accurate results, the eye should be at the same level as the liquid's meniscus.

Graduated cylinders come in various sizes, ranging from a few milliliters to several liters, depending on the intended use. They are commonly used in chemistry, biology, and other scientific disciplines where precise volume measurements are required.
