Ionic Halides: In these compounds, a halogen atom gains an electron to form a negatively charged ion (anion), known as a halide ion. The halide ion is usually written as X^-, where X represents the halogen element (e.g., Cl^- for chloride ion, Br^- for bromide ion, etc.). These anions can combine with positively charged ions (cations) to form ionic compounds. For example, sodium chloride (NaCl) is formed when sodium cations (Na+) combine with chloride ions (Cl^-).

Covalent (or Molecular) Halides: These compounds are formed by sharing electrons between the halogen and the other element. Covalent halides are typically found in the gas or liquid state at room temperature. For example, hydrogen fluoride (HF) and chlorine gas (Cl2) are covalent halides.

Halides play essential roles in various chemical processes and industries. For instance, common salt (sodium chloride) is a halide that is widely used as a seasoning and food preservative. Halides are also utilized in the synthesis of various organic and inorganic compounds, as well as in chemical reactions and industrial applications. However, some halides, such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), have been associated with environmental issues due to their role in ozone depletion.
