Silk is obtained from the silk moth in the cocoon stage. When a silk moth reaches the final stage of its life cycle, it spins a protective covering called a cocoon made of silk fibers. The cocoon is formed by the silk moth larva, also known as a caterpillar or silkworm. Inside the cocoon, the larva undergoes metamorphosis and transforms into a pupa. It is during this pupal stage that the silk fibers are harvested to make silk. After the pupa transforms into a moth and emerges from the cocoon, the silk fibers become too brittle to be used for commercial purposes. Therefore, the cocoon is typically collected and processed to obtain the silk threads before the moth breaks out.
