Acetone is considered an aprotic polar solvent. An aprotic solvent is one that does not have an available hydrogen atom bound to an oxygen, nitrogen, or fluorine atom capable of forming hydrogen bonds. Acetone has a polar covalent bond between its carbon and oxygen atoms, which results in a partial negative charge on the oxygen atom and a partial positive charge on the carbon atom. This polarity makes acetone a good solvent for polar compounds and reactions, but it lacks the ability to form hydrogen bonds with solute molecules, which is a characteristic of protic solvents like water and alcohols.
