Fire exists in the state of matter known as plasma. Plasma is often referred to as the fourth state of matter, in addition to solid, liquid, and gas. In a fire, the substance being burned undergoes a chemical reaction called combustion, which produces heat and light. The high temperatures involved cause the atoms and molecules of the burning material to become ionized, resulting in the formation of a plasma. Plasma is a state of matter in which the atoms or molecules are stripped of their electrons, leading to the presence of positively charged ions and negatively charged electrons. Fire typically appears as a luminous, glowing plasma due to the excitation and emission of light by the energized particles within it.
