Multiply the atomic mass of each element by the number of atoms of that element in the compound. In the case of water (H2O), there are two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. So, multiply the atomic mass of hydrogen by 2 and the atomic mass of oxygen by 1.

Hydrogen: 2 atoms x 1.008 g/mol = 2.016 g/mol
