The Solvay process, also known as the ammonia-soda process, is an industrial method used to produce sodium carbonate (soda ash) from sodium chloride (table salt) and limestone (calcium carbonate). The process was developed by Ernest Solvay in the 19th century and is widely used for the commercial production of sodium carbonate. Here are the key reactions that occur in the Solvay process:

Formation of sodium hydrogen carbonate (bicarbonate) from sodium chloride:

Ammonia gas is bubbled through a saturated solution of sodium chloride (brine).
The ammonia reacts with the sodium chloride in the following way:
NH

H

O

Precipitation of sodium bicarbonate:

Carbon dioxide is introduced into the solution containing ammonium chloride, leading to the precipitation of sodium bicarbonate:

Formation of sodium carbonate from sodium bicarbonate:

Sodium bicarbonate is separated from the solution, and it reacts with additional ammonia and carbon dioxide to form sodium carbonate and water:

Ammonia recovery:

Ammonium chloride, a byproduct formed in the first step, is returned to the process. It reacts with limestone (calcium carbonate) and releases ammonia gas:

Regeneration of ammonia:

The released ammonia in the previous step is recycled and used in the first step again.
The overall reaction of the Solvay process can be summarized as follows:

This process is efficient in producing sodium carbonate from readily available raw materials and has been widely employed in the soda ash industry for many years.
