A covalent compound, also known as a molecular compound, is a chemical compound formed by the sharing of electron pairs between atoms. In covalent compounds, atoms are held together by the mutual attraction of their shared electrons. This sharing allows each atom to achieve a stable electron configuration, typically resembling that of a noble gas. Covalent compounds often consist of nonmetal elements and are characterized by relatively low melting and boiling points compared to ionic compounds. Examples of covalent compounds include water (H2O), methane (CH4), and carbon dioxide (CO2).
