Auxin was discovered by Charles Darwin and his son Francis Darwin in the late 19th century. They conducted experiments on plant shoots and observed that the growth of the shoot tip was essential for the curvature of the shoot toward light. They hypothesized the existence of a growth-promoting substance that moved from the shoot tip downward, and they termed this substance "auxin" from the Greek word "auxein," meaning to grow. Later research by other scientists, such as Frits Went, confirmed the presence and functions of auxins in plant growth and development.
