They hypothesized the existence of a growth-promoting substance that moved from the shoot tip downward, and they termed this substance "auxin" from the Greek word "auxein," meaning to grow. Later research by other scientists, such as Frits Went, confirmed the presence and functions of auxins in plant growth and development.
