Reducing Water Loss: The waxy cuticle forms a waterproof barrier that minimizes water loss through evaporation, especially in arid or dry conditions. This adaptation helps plants conserve water and maintain their internal water balance.

Preventing Microbial Invasion: The cuticle acts as a physical barrier that prevents the entry of pathogens, such as bacteria and fungi, into the leaf tissues. This protection helps plants avoid infections and diseases.

Shielding from UV Radiation: The cuticle also provides some degree of protection against harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. This is particularly important as excessive UV radiation can damage plant cells and DNA.

Reducing Mechanical Damage: The cuticle helps reduce mechanical damage to the leaf surface, such as abrasion from wind-blown particles or physical contact with other objects.

Preventing Herbivory: While the cuticle itself may not deter all herbivores, it can make the leaf surface less palatable and accessible, deterring some herbivorous insects and animals.
