The trachea, commonly known as the windpipe, serves as the main airway for respiratory air to travel between the larynx (voice box) and the bronchi of the lungs. Its primary function is to allow air to pass freely to and from the lungs during breathing. The trachea is lined with a mucous membrane and small hair-like structures called cilia, which help to trap particles and sweep them out of the respiratory system to prevent them from entering the lungs. Additionally, the trachea contains cartilaginous rings that provide structural support and prevent the airway from collapsing during breathing.
