The trachea is lined with a mucous membrane and small hair-like structures called cilia, which help to trap particles and sweep them out of the respiratory system to prevent them from entering the lungs. Additionally, the trachea contains cartilaginous rings that provide structural support and prevent the airway from collapsing during breathing.
