The three-chambered heart of an amphibian serves the function of pumping blood through the circulatory system. While the amphibian heart is more complex than a simple two-chambered heart found in fish, it is less efficient than the four-chambered heart found in mammals and birds.

Here's how the three-chambered heart of an amphibian works:

Two Atria: The heart has two atria, which are the upper chambers. One atrium receives oxygenated blood from the lungs (in pulmonary circulation), while the other receives deoxygenated blood from the body (in systemic circulation).

One Ventricle: The heart has a single ventricle, which is the lower chamber. The ventricle receives blood from both atria and pumps it out to various parts of the body. This means that oxygenated and deoxygenated blood partially mix in the ventricle.

Partial Separation: While the ventricle is not completely divided into two chambers like in a four-chambered heart, there is some degree of separation via a spiral valve. This helps to reduce the mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood to a certain extent.

Double Circulation: Amphibians have a double circulatory system, similar to mammals and birds. This means that blood flows through two circuits: one to the lungs for oxygenation and another to the body to deliver oxygen and nutrients.

The function of this three-chambered heart is to pump blood, but it does not provide as much separation of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood as a four-chambered heart. This design is less efficient in fully separating oxygenated and deoxygenated blood, which is one of the reasons why amphibians are not as metabolically active as mammals and birds. Nevertheless, it allows them to survive both in aquatic and terrestrial environments, as they can switch between breathing through their skin and lungs as needed.
