A polysepalous calyx refers to a type of flower structure where the sepals, which are the outermost whorl of floral parts and typically green in color, are distinct and separate from each other. In other words, each sepal in the calyx is not fused or joined together with the others. Instead, they are free or loosely attached to each other at the base, if at all.

This term "polysepalous" can be broken down to "poly," meaning many, and "sepalous," referring to sepals. Therefore, polysepalous literally means "many sepals." Each individual sepal in a polysepalous calyx may appear as distinct, separate units encircling the base of the flower.

In contrast, a gamosepalous calyx is one where the sepals are fused together into a single structure, either partially or completely, forming a tube or cup-like shape around the base of the flower.
