Karyotheca, also known as the nuclear envelope or nuclear membrane, is a double-layered membrane that surrounds the nucleus of eukaryotic cells. It separates the contents of the nucleus from the cytoplasm and regulates the passage of molecules, such as proteins and RNA, between the nucleus and the cytoplasm through nuclear pores.

The nuclear envelope consists of two lipid bilayers, an outer membrane, and an inner membrane, which are separated by a space known as the perinuclear space. The nuclear envelope is supported by a network of protein filaments called the nuclear lamina, which provides structural support and helps maintain the shape of the nucleus.

During cell division, the nuclear envelope breaks down to allow the chromosomes to separate and move to opposite poles of the dividing cell. After division is complete, the nuclear envelope reforms around each set of chromosomes in the newly formed daughter cells.
