The caecum (also spelled cecum) is a pouch-like structure that forms the beginning of the large intestine, located at the junction of the small intestine and the colon in the digestive system of many vertebrates, including mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians.

Its primary functions include:

Fermentation: The caecum serves as a site for fermentation of cellulose and other indigestible carbohydrates. In animals like herbivores, particularly those with a plant-based diet, the caecum contains microbes that break down cellulose and other complex carbohydrates into simpler compounds, such as volatile fatty acids, which can then be absorbed and utilized as energy by the animal.

Water and electrolyte absorption: After fermentation, the caecum absorbs water and electrolytes from the remaining material, helping to concentrate the waste and form feces.

Vitamin synthesis: In some animals, the caecum also plays a role in the synthesis of certain vitamins, such as vitamin K and certain B vitamins, by the resident microbial population.

While the caecum is well-developed and prominent in herbivores, it is often reduced or absent in carnivorous or omnivorous animals, where the digestive system is adapted differently to handle their diet. In humans, the caecum is relatively small and less functional compared to herbivorous animals, but it still plays a role in the absorption of water and electrolytes before material passes into the colon. Additionally, the human appendix is a small, finger-like extension of the caecum, though its function in humans is not entirely clear and it is often considered vestigial.
