A ball and socket joint is a type of synovial joint in the body that allows for a wide range of motion in various directions. It consists of a rounded, ball-like surface of one bone fitting into a cup-like depression of another bone. This structure enables movements such as flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, and rotation. The most well-known example of a ball and socket joint in the human body is the hip joint and the shoulder joint. These joints provide great stability along with significant mobility due to their structure, allowing for diverse movements.
