2. Cell Fusion

After a few weeks, the animal's spleen is harvested, where the immune cells (B cells) that produce antibodies are located. These B cells are then fused with myeloma cells (cancer cells) to create hybridoma cells. This fusion allows for the production of a large number of antibodies.

3. Selection

The hybridoma cells are screened to identify those producing the desired antibody. Only the cells that produce the specific antibody of interest are selected for further growth.

4. Cloning and Expansion

The selected hybridoma cells are cloned, allowing for the mass production of the specific antibody. These cells can be cultured in large bioreactors to produce significant quantities of antibodies.

5. Purification

Once produced, the antibodies are purified from the culture medium to remove any impurities and other proteins. This ensures that the final product is safe and effective for use.

Applications of Antibodies

Antibodies have numerous applications in medicine and research, including:

  • Diagnostics: Used in tests to detect diseases.
  • Treatment: Monoclonal antibodies are used in therapies for conditions like cancer and autoimmune diseases.
  • Research: Essential tools in laboratories for studying proteins and cellular processes.
