Hydrochloric Acid Production: Oxyntic cells are primarily responsible for secreting hydrochloric acid (HCl) into the stomach lumen. Hydrochloric acid creates an acidic environment in the stomach, which is essential for the activation of various digestive enzymes and the breakdown of food particles.

Intrinsic Factor Secretion: In addition to hydrochloric acid, oxyntic cells also produce intrinsic factor. Intrinsic factor is a glycoprotein that is necessary for the absorption of vitamin B12 in the small intestine. Vitamin B12 is essential for the production of red blood cells and the proper functioning of the nervous system.

Regulation of Acid-Base Balance: Oxyntic cells help maintain the acid-base balance in the stomach by regulating the secretion of hydrochloric acid. This balance is crucial for the proper digestion of food and the activation of enzymes.

Protection Against Pathogens: The highly acidic environment created by the secretion of hydrochloric acid helps to kill or inhibit the growth of many ingested pathogens, preventing infections and promoting overall gastrointestinal health.
