The main source of energy in most ecosystems is the Sun (option a). Sunlight is essential for photosynthesis, the process by which green plants and some bacteria convert light energy into chemical energy, stored in the form of organic compounds like glucose. These plants are commonly referred to as primary producers because they can produce their own food using energy from the Sun.

Animals (option d) obtain energy by consuming other organisms, either directly or indirectly. They cannot directly convert sunlight into energy like plants can. Animals are called consumers, and they rely on the energy stored in the organic compounds of plants or other animals for their own growth, reproduction, and other life processes.

So, while green plants (option b) play a crucial role as primary producers, they ultimately derive their energy from the Sun. Bacteria (option c) can also be primary producers in certain ecosystems, such as deep-sea hydrothermal vents, where they use chemical energy from inorganic compounds rather than sunlight. However, in most ecosystems, the Sun is the primary source of energy that drives the flow of energy through the food chain.
