Camels have only one stomach, but their stomach is divided into four compartments. These compartments are the rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum. This multi-compartmental stomach allows camels to efficiently digest and extract nutrients from the tough and fibrous plant material they often consume. The unique structure of their stomach helps them cope with their desert environment and the challenges of obtaining nutrition from their diet, which mainly consists of coarse desert vegetation.
