Enzymes are highly specialized proteins that act as biological catalysts, speeding up chemical reactions within cells without being consumed in the process. The fundamental mechanism by which enzymes work is called the "lock and key" model:

Substrate Recognition: Enzymes have specific regions called active sites, which have a shape and chemical properties that are complementary to those of the substrate molecules. When a substrate molecule with the right shape binds to the enzyme's active site, it forms an enzyme-substrate complex.

Catalysis: Once the substrate binds to the active site, the enzyme undergoes a conformational change, resulting in an induced fit. This induced fit strains the substrate bonds, lowering the activation energy required for the reaction to occur. As a result, the chemical reaction is catalyzed, leading to the formation of products.

Product Release: After the reaction has occurred, the products no longer fit well into the active site and are released. The enzyme is then free to bind to another substrate molecule and catalyze another reaction.

Enzyme Regeneration: Enzymes can catalyze thousands to millions of reactions per second. They are not consumed in the reaction and remain unchanged after the reaction is complete. Therefore, they can continue to catalyze reactions indefinitely under suitable conditions.

Enzyme activity can be influenced by various factors such as temperature, pH, substrate concentration, and the presence of inhibitors or activators. Changes in these factors can affect the rate at which enzymes catalyze reactions.
