Fertilization typically takes place in the fallopian tube, which is also known as the oviduct. The fallopian tubes are the structures that connect the ovaries to the uterus. During ovulation, an egg is released from the ovary into the fallopian tube. If sperm are present in the fallopian tube at that time, fertilization can occur. The fertilized egg, called a zygote, then travels down the fallopian tube toward the uterus, where it implants and develops into an embryo. The follicle is a structure within the ovary that contains the developing egg, but fertilization does not occur there. The uterus, or womb, is the site where the embryo implants and develops into a fetus, but fertilization itself does not take place there. The vagina is the muscular canal that connects the uterus to the external opening of the female reproductive system, but fertilization does not occur there either.
