Wilting refers to the process by which a plant loses its rigidity and becomes limp or droopy. This typically occurs when the plant cells lose water and the internal pressure (turgor pressure) decreases. Turgor pressure is what gives plant cells their structural support and rigidity. When a plant experiences water loss, either due to insufficient water supply or excessive transpiration (loss of water through leaves), the cells deflate, causing the plant to wilt.

Wilting is a common physiological response in plants to water stress, and it serves as an indicator that the plant is not receiving enough water to maintain turgor pressure. If water is supplied to the plant, it can often recover and regain its turgidity. However, prolonged wilting can lead to irreversible damage to the plant cells and, ultimately, impact the overall health and vitality of the plant.
