Mountains are generally cooler than plains due to various factors:

Elevation: Mountains are located at higher elevations compared to plains. As you ascend in altitude, the air pressure decreases, which leads to a decrease in temperature. On average, the temperature drops by about 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit (0.65 degrees Celsius) for every 1,000 feet (305 meters) of elevation gain. Therefore, the higher elevation of mountains contributes to cooler temperatures.

Atmospheric pressure: The lower air pressure at higher altitudes causes the air molecules to spread out, leading to a decrease in temperature. As a result, the air in mountains is less dense and holds less heat, resulting in cooler temperatures.

Topography and land surface: Mountains often have rugged terrain with steep slopes and valleys. This topography affects the movement of air masses. As air flows upward along the mountain slopes, it expands and cools, leading to lower temperatures. Additionally, valleys and canyons in mountainous regions can act as channels for cold air drainage, allowing cooler air to accumulate in these areas.

Vegetation and moisture: Mountains tend to have different vegetation and moisture patterns compared to plains. Higher elevations often have forests or alpine vegetation, which provides shade and evapotranspiration, leading to cooler temperatures. In contrast, plains may have more open grasslands or agricultural areas, which are generally warmer due to less shade and lower evapotranspiration.

Radiative cooling: Mountains can experience more efficient radiative cooling compared to plains. At higher altitudes, there is often less atmospheric pollution, humidity, and cloud cover. These factors allow for better radiative heat loss during the night, resulting in cooler temperatures.

It's important to note that there can be variations in temperature within mountains and plains depending on local weather patterns, seasons, and geographical factors. However, the overall trend is that mountains tend to be cooler than plains due to the factors mentioned above.
