METALS HAVING ONE ELECTRON IN THEIR OUTERMOST SHELL CAN LOOSE WHILE METALS HAVINGTWO ELECTRONS IN THEIR OUTERMOST SHELL CAN LOOSE TWO ELECTRONS.EG;SODIUM (11) LOSES 1 WHILE MAGNESIUM(12) LOSES TWO ELECTRONS IN BOND FORMATION.

the number of electrons that an atom would lose depends on the number of valence elctrons(electrons in the outermost shell)So,atoms having two valence elctrons will lose two electrons and atoms having one valence electron will lose one electron.
