Total internal reflection means that there can be a source of light underwater that is invisible to viewers out of the water at certain angles. For more information, read on!

Total internal reflection is a phenomenon that can be explained by Snell's Law which models the refraction of a light beam as it crosses from one medium into another.

Snell's Law states that as light moves from medium 1 to medium 2, the product of:

  1. The sine of the angle formed by the light beam and the normal
  2. The refractive index of the medium (derived from the speed at which light travels in said medium)

will be constant.
