Total internal reflection means that there can be a source of light underwater that is invisible to viewers out of the water at certain angles. For more information, read on!
Total internal reflection is a phenomenon that can be explained by Snell's Law which models the refraction of a light beam as it crosses from one medium into another.
Snell's Law states that as light moves from medium 1 to medium 2, the product of:
- The sine of the angle formed by the light beam and the normal
- The refractive index of the medium (derived from the speed at which light travels in said medium)
will be constant.
