Total internal reflection is a phenomenon which occurs when a propagating wave strikes a medium boundary at an angle larger than a particular critical angle with respect to the normal to the surface

When light travelling in a denser medium is incident at the surface of a rarer medium such that the angle of incidence is greater than the critical angle,(for d given pair of media) the ray is totally reflected back into the denser medium.this phenomenon is called total internal reflection.
