A neutral atom always contains an equal number of protons and electrons.

Protons are positively charged subatomic particles found in the nucleus of an atom, and they determine the atom's identity because the number of protons in the nucleus is the atomic number of the element. Electrons are negatively charged subatomic particles that orbit the nucleus. In a neutral atom, the number of electrons is equal to the number of protons, which results in a net charge of zero. This balance of positive protons and negative electrons is what makes an atom electrically neutral.
