RBCs also known as Red blood cells are formed in the bone marrow by erythropoiesis. They have an average lifespan of 120 days. After ageing, they are selectively recognized in the spleen, liver and lymph nodes by macrophages followed by phagocytosis. This process is called eryptosis.
