Hi!

Firstly, the physical state of a substance at a given temperature can be predicted if you know its melting point & boiling point. In general, pure ionic compounds will be crystalline solids. Pure compounds containing only non-metal atoms will tend to be molecular (covalent bonding). Lighter ones will be gases; heavy ones will be solids. Those of intermediate weight might be liquids.

As for various, not as much common, compounds, the more you do chemistry, the more you pick up. For those compounds with which you are not familiar, you can look up the boiling and melting points on the net. To determine whether the compound is soluble or insoluble, you can go through the solubility rules that are available online.

Hope this helps you!
