Before answering this question we should know what combustion is and what combustible substances are. Combustion is an exothermic redox chemical reaction which takes place at high temperature between a fuel and an oxidant. A combustible substance is those substances which burn in air to produce heat and light. Complete step by step solution: Oxygen does not burn, oxygen is nonflammable but it is an oxidizer. Oxygen needs fire, that's why it is dangerous if there is oxygen around something which is burning because oxygen helps the fire to burn more quickly. After reading the above paragraph we can say that oxygen is a non- combustible gas, it only helps in the process of combustion. Hence oxygen is a combustible gas and it keeps the burning splinter glowing. Hence the correct answer is true i.e. option (A). Additional information: Some of the uses of oxygen when it is used as a non-combustible gas: -Oxygen therapy is a treatment which delivers oxygen gas for us to breathe. -Oxygen is used with fuel gases for several purposes this includes gas welding, gas cutting, oxygen scarfing, flame cleaning, flame straightening, oxygen scarfing, flame hardening etc. -Oxygen is also used in metallurgy. -Oxygen is used in industries for the production of steel. It is used in the blast furnace to turn carbon dioxide into carbon dioxide, which helps to reduce the iron oxides to pure iron. Note: Oxygen gas has low thermal energy and electrical conductivity. The electronegativity and the ionization energy of oxygen are quite high. We can extinguish a fire by cutting the supply of oxygen.
