An amoeba obtains its food primarily through a process called phagocytosis. Here’s how it works:

Detection: Amoebas move by extending their pseudopodia (temporary "feet") in the direction of movement. They also use these extensions to detect potential food sources.

Engulfment: When an amoeba encounters a suitable food particle, such as a bacterium or algae, it extends its pseudopodia around the particle. This forms a temporary food vacuole around the particle.

Digestion: Once the food particle is enclosed within the food vacuole, the amoeba secretes digestive enzymes into the vacuole. These enzymes break down the food particle into smaller molecules that can be absorbed by the cell.

Absorption: The small molecules resulting from digestion diffuse into the cytoplasm of the amoeba from the food vacuole.

Excretion: Any undigested material or waste products are expelled from the cell through the cell membrane.

This process allows the amoeba to obtain nutrients from its environment, primarily by ingesting and digesting small organisms or organic particles in its surroundings.
