A pseudo halide refers to a chemical species that behaves similarly to a halide ion (such as chloride, bromide, or iodide) but is not a true halide ion. One example of a pseudo halide is the cyanide ion (CN⁻). Cyanide ions exhibit similar chemical properties to halide ions but contain a different element (carbon and nitrogen) in comparison to traditional halides.

A pseudo halogen, on the other hand, is a chemical species that, while not a true halogen, exhibits similar chemical properties. One example of a pseudo halogen is the cyanogen molecule (C₂N₂). Cyanogen has a diatomic structure and displays chemical reactivity that is reminiscent of halogens, making it a pseudo halogen.
