The law of segregation is a principle in genetics formulated by Gregor Mendel, often referred to as Mendel's first law. It describes the inheritance of alleles (alternative forms of a gene) during the formation of gametes (sperm and egg cells). The law of segregation can be summarized as follows:

Each individual has two alleles for each gene, one inherited from each parent. These alleles segregate (separate) during the formation of gametes, so that each gamete carries only one allele for each gene.

In other words, the two alleles present in an individual for a particular gene will separate or segregate from each other during the formation of reproductive cells. Consequently, each gamete will contain only one allele for that gene. This segregation is a crucial step in the inheritance of genetic traits and is a fundamental concept in Mendelian genetics.
