Plants that rely on anemophily typically produce large quantities of lightweight, dry, and often small-sized pollen grains that are easily carried by air currents. These plants often have inconspicuous flowers that lack bright colors, fragrances, or nectar, as they do not require specific pollinators like insects or animals to facilitate the transfer of pollen.

The success of anemophilous plants in pollination depends on several factors, including the production of abundant pollen, the ability of the pollen grains to remain airborne, and the proximity of male and female reproductive structures within the same plant or between nearby plants.

Due to the random nature of wind dispersal, anemophilous plants often produce a surplus of pollen to increase the chances of successful pollination. However, this also means that a significant amount of pollen may be wasted or may land on non-receptive surfaces, such as the ground or water bodies.

Examples of plants that employ anemophily as their primary pollination strategy include grasses, conifers (such as pine and fir trees), and many trees that bear catkins, such as birch, oak, and willow. Anemophily is considered an ancient and primitive method of pollination, and it is estimated that around 10% of all flowering plant species rely on wind pollination as their main reproductive strategy.
