Conventionally, the direction of current is taken as the direction of flow of positive charge. This convention, known as conventional current, was established before the discovery of the electron and is still widely used in electrical engineering and circuit analysis. According to this convention, current flows from the positive terminal of a voltage source (such as a battery) towards the negative terminal. Although electrons are negatively charged particles and actually flow in the opposite direction to conventional current, the convention of using the direction of flow of positive charge simplifies circuit analysis and allows for consistency in electrical theory and calculations.
